SMPA Sends Letter to Congress with 1,337 Signatures

Logo Congress1a.jpgText of Letter Signed by 1,337 Residents of Maplewood and S Orange:

Dear Senators Lautenberg and Menendez and Congressmen Payne and Pascrell:

South Mountain Peace Action wants to thank you for voting for language in the supplemental appropriations bills that calls for a withdrawal of US troops from Iraq no later than August 31, 2008 (in the House bill) and no later than March 31, 2008 (in the Senate bill).

We regard both measures as important steps toward ending the tragic war in Iraq that continues to cause enormous and unnecessary loss of life and treasure for both Americans and Iraqis.

In addition to thanking you for your votes, we urge you to insist that the withdrawal language be retained in the final version of the bill and to oppose any appropriations bill that does not contain such language.

Finally, since the withdrawal dates in the legislation are flexible, we urge you to do everything possible to encourage a withdrawal that is completed earlier than the dates in the legislation of August 31, 2008, or March 31, 2008.

Sincerely,

Paul Surovell
Chair, South Mountain Peace Action
