Response to Candidate Questionnaire by Jeff Dubowy

Response by Candidate for South Orange Board of Trustees:

JEFF DUBOWY

to South Mountain Peace Action Candidate Questionnaire

QUESTION #1 Over the past two years, federal spending on the war and occupation of Iraq has cost South Orange and Maplewood taxpayers an estimated $62.5 million. The cost to South Orange has been about $27.6 million, the cost to Maplewood, about $34.9 million.

REPLY BY JEFF DUBOWY:

I am running for a seat on the South Orange Village Board of Trustees since I care deeply about the local issues impacting our village. These local issues involve downtown redevelopment, relations with Seton Hall, opportunities to lower the property tax, parking and many others. As I have walked door to door during the campaign, I've had the opportunity to listen to my constituents and what they would like me to do if elected. Not one person has asked me to take a stance on the war, the Patriot Act, First Amendment Rights, Military Spending, etc. but almost everyone has talked about one of the local issues I previously listed. The citizens of South Orange who elect me are asking questions relative to the local issues where my decisions will have an impact. My personal feelings on the war are probably in line with your organization but my responsibility to the citizens of South Orange is to make sure I deliver on the local issues first.

QUESTION #2 In this era of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act, do you think a Trustee or Township Committee member has a responsibility to protect First Amendment and privacy rights of our residents, as well as to assure a safe and secure environment? How would you do this?
